Information about Begindergarten

Begindergarten is a half day program for children
who are 5 years old by September 1st.  We have
class Monday through Friday from 8:15 to 11:45.
Begindergarten is a transition class into the
elementary school.   This is a great start for your
child as they will be able to experiment and
explore as they meet new friends.

What did your child do today?

Friday, Jan. 27
Today we made our My Jj Book.  We met with our buddies and cut out snowflakes by folding circles. This was a great task to teach very fine motor skills because if they cut to big - the snowflake did not turn out.  We also went to gym.  I sent home all snowpants and boots so make sure they come back on Monday if needed!
Thursday, Jan. 26
Today we worked on tally marks and how they are useful when counting large numbers.  We worked on the letter J and reviewed other letter sounds.  Mrs. Determan came and taught guidance.  We visited the book fair and went to boost-up, too!  Remember tomorrow is library day!
Wednesday, Jan. 25
Today we migrated South!!!! We discussed what migration means and why birds fly south for the winter.  We read a new book - Pete the Cat on the smartboard...it goes along with a catchy tune so I am sure you will hear it this evening, as they sang it all morning long :)  Please remember all snow gear - coat, pants, boots, gloves and hat.  The children are not allowed to play "in" the snow without all the gear so they are sad when they have to watch.
Tuesday, Jan. 24
100 Days!!! We made it to the 100th day of school.  We skipped counted by 10 and 5 to get to 100.  They made a book My 100 Things.  This went along with our counting by 10s to get to 100.  I introduced the letter J.  We also had music today.
Monday, Jan. 23
We were BUSY today!  We finished up the letter Ii today and made our My Ii Book.  The kids love to make these every Friday so I let them finish today since there was no school on Friday.  We made homemade Ice Cream today!  Ask your child if they remember what ingredients our recipe called for (milk, sugar and vanilla).  We worked on the number eleven and the concept of 1 less today.  Tomorrow is the big day!!!
Thursday, Jan. 19
I apologize for not being present today.  I am home with a sick child. I will be gone again tomorrow.  I am sure that everything went well.  They worked on the letter I by sorting pictures that start with i.  They read a scholastic magazine on penguins.  Please remember to send your school mall booklets if you have not done so.  Tomorrow is the last day.  Also, send library books.
Wednesday, Jan.18
Today we worked on how letters make words and words make sentences!  We discussed the importance of spaces between words but not between letters when writing a word.  We reviewed the letter I.  In math we reviewed patterns and graphs on the smartboard.  We also had computers today.  Again, we did not go outside for recess!
Tuesday, Jan. 17
Today we discussed Martin Luther King, Jr.  We made a mini booklet summarizing what we discussed.  I introduced the letter I and learned that it has two sounds.  We will continue working on the letter during the week.  The School Mall fundraiser was sent home today.  They can bring back the booklet any day this week, but must be back by Friday.  Please make sure that you fill out T-shirt size on every page.
Friday, Jan. 13
Today we made our My M Book and learned the sight word "look".  They had to make their own page on the back of the book.  Please have your child read these books to you.  We met with our buddies and played board games.  It was fun to have "role models" to show us how to wait our turn and play by the rules!! In math we started discussing 1 less.  We went to gym.  Have a 3 day weekend!
Thursday, Jan. 12
Today they had guidance and worked on looking at people's faces to determine how they are feeling.  We worked on the beginning sound of M.  We went to boost-up.
Wednesday, Jan. 11
Today we read the story, The Mitten by Jan Brett.  We practiced retelling the story by using picture cards.  This was also a review with sequencing since different animals all entered the mitten in a certain order.  Ask your child what happened when the mouse entered the mitten...(caused the bear to sneeze!)  In math we played different games (Teddy Bear Bingo, Cookie Count, Marker Boards, Number word match).  We had computers today.  If you would like your child to leave boots, snowpants, or both at school...please leave me a note or else I will send them home everyday.
Tuesday, Jan. 10
We had a guest speaker today!  She came in and read us the book, Children Around the World. This was to help us see that all children are unique and different.  This month we spend time discussing diversity in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.  She shared about her heritage and even came dressed in her custom clothing!  She gave each child an ABC Wiki Stick book to keep!  It was so much fun to listen to her tell her story!  We had music today and worked some more on the letter M.  I introduced new lined paper that we will practice our printing with.  In math, we used blocks to see which name was longer - our first or our last!
Monday, Jan. 9
We started off the morning with an all school assembly for Character Counts.  This month is Responsibility! I introduced the letter M.  We had computers and boost-up for specials and ended the day with a snowball game in math.  Asked your child what we used for snowballs in our math game (cotton balls)
Friday, Jan. 6
Today we really worked hard in listening for the ending sounds in words (not the letter).  For example "What is the ending sound of snake?"  They are in the habit of saying S since it is habit to ask a child what does the word start with.  I would like them to make the /k/ sound.  This will help with our rhyming. In math, we worked on labeling our patters with AB and C.  Then we made snowball patterns using different sizes of white plates.  We ended the activity with the students painting their own pattern using carrots for the snowman nose.  Gave a great weekend!
Thursday, Jan. 5
Today we worked on sequencing on how to make a snowman.  We read a few stories that demonstrated ways to make a snowman.  The children then cut and glued pieces in order on how to make a snowman.  As you can see from their work, we moved up to 6 steps!  We completed our Scholastic News and we discussed different words that are made from "snow".  Tomorrow is library day, but most students do not have a book checked out.  Prior to break we turned them all in.  Enjoy the beautiful weather!!!
Wednesday, Jan. 4
Today we worked on listening skills and watching for details.  We seem to be in such a hurry that we forget important information.  We also read a story called Snowmen At Night.  This was a cute story describing what they think their snowmen do at night while they are sleeping.  The students then brainstormed what they thought their snowman would do (if we had snow...) while they sleep.  They are hanging in our hallway!  Ask your child what they drew.
Tuesday, Jan. 3
WELCOME BACK!  I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing break!  Today we explored with many of our new presents!  Thanks again!  We played ABC review games in different centers.  We worked with our new puzzles with "Puzzle Partners".  We discussed our favorite present and then drew and labeled the present.  Our theme this week is snow and snowman!  I am not complaining...but difficult to get "into the theme" this week with 40 - 50 degree weather :)
